Extinct in the Wild
Extinct in the Wild means no wild population remains, though the species still survives in human care.
How to read this label
On the IUCN Red List, this label describes global extinction risk, not how common the species feels in any one place. Extinct in the Wild means the wild lineage has been broken, but living individuals remain and a return may still be possible.
What the label can hide
The label can hide the harder question: has the place that lost the species become safe enough for it to survive there again? GBIF occurrence data can show where a species has been documented, but it also reflects where people have looked.
What changes the trajectory
Return depends on more than breeding numbers: release sites must be safe, habitat must function again, and the original pressure must stay gone.
