Endangered

Endangered means a species is in serious trouble in the wild, but recovery is still possible if the main threats are reduced.

How to read this label

On the IUCN Red List, this label describes global extinction risk, not how common the species feels in any one place. For Endangered species, the margin is narrower: enough habitat, breeding adults, and protection may remain, but each loss now carries more weight.

What the label can hide

The number alone rarely tells the story. Risk can come from a fast fall, a broken range, too few mature individuals, or places where the original threat has not stopped. GBIF occurrence data can show where a species has been documented, but it also reflects where people have looked.

What changes the trajectory

Recovery depends on stopping the active pressure: habitat loss, killing, trade, bycatch, conflict, or the repeated failure of breeding seasons.
